George Kershaw
A 1950s passport photo |
On holiday at Llandudno c. 1935, with wife Bessie and daughter Elizabeth. Note George's trademark bowler hat. |
In the first world war George Kershaw was a member of the Royal flying
corp. He was close to being called up to help the white Russians
- luckily he never saw action, because the average life expectancy for
WW1 pilots was about 2 minutes. Had some faceless beaurocrat in the
war office signed some piece of paper, my entire branch of the family would
never have existed.

Born 23-11-1899, died 4 April 1974. With his wife Bessie Holland, produced 1 child Elizabeth.
His parents were: Robert Kershaw and Sarah nee Bardsley.
George was a master tailor who lived in Royton (nr Oldham) throughout
his life. At the wedding of his daughter in 1953, his son-in-law John remembered
that his father only signed the registry book as an engineer while George
signed as a MASTER tailor!
George was crippled by a stroke in 1964, which paralysed one side,
leaving him wheelchair bound. His grand-daughter Caroline
first saw him walk on a film of her christening taken by a family friend.
She saw the film when she was over 30 years old and he was long dead!
